Purple Rain es un himno, el fin y un nuevo amanecer, comienzo, un adios... Fue la última canción que interpretó (al menos en público) Prince antes de morir. Lo hizo el 14 de abril de 2016 en la Superbowl.

Prince explicó el significado de la canción de la siguiente manera:
